Hello everyone.
Every Saturday morning, the weekend blog is uploaded for the community to read. For some, it brightens up their weekend, for others it informs them of what is happening in the school, for the children – it’s a chance to see their photograph. This week however, there was a different reason to look forward to when Saturday comes………
WHEN SATURDAY COMES
A huge well done to our year 6 pupils who performed their end of year production this week. They not only demonstrated their acting skills, singing ability, discipline and focus in front of an audience – but also their ability to collaborate and support each other. You were brilliant!
‘When Saturday Comes’ was first performed in 1994 and has since been performed by schools and youth theatre groups all over the country (including at Southwick Barn in July 1999). This production however was superb! Well done everyone.
The songs will shortly be available on Spotify, iTunes, Apple Music (recorded by Shoreham Beach Primary Year 6 2025). I will publish a link once they’ve have been mixed, mastered and uploaded.
FACTOID OF THE WEEK
On this day in 1965, The Beach Boys released ‘California Girls’. This song was the inspiration behind ‘Surfin’ Around’ in the Year 6 production ‘When Saturday Comes’.
CAPTURED
Here are some learning moments in and around school, captured by Mrs Noble:
FUNKY FRIDAY
Thank you to the many parents and grandparents who attended our Funky Friday assembly yesterday. The new Head and Deputy were in charge this week. Well done to Reuben and Rufus for running the assembly so smoothly. They also met children on the Cheal Close gate and entered names into the Log Book.
An additional well done to Elsa who played two beautiful pieces of music on the piano as parents entered the assembly. Well done Elsa.
OSCAR
Congratulations to Vesper (Year 2) on being presented with an Oscar. Every day, we see her smiling face. She always says good morning and is ready to start a new day. Vesper is so kind and generous – she goes out of her way to help others. Sometimes, learning can be a challenge so she works even harder to do her best. During maths lessons, she confidently shares her ideas, explaining how she has worked out a calculation. We are all so proud of the resilience and determination she demonstrates in every aspect of her learning. She is creative and loves to draw and make things and she especially likes to share her home learning with us. Every morning she wakes up at 5am three mornings a week to go swim training. She is the youngest in the squad but always tries her best and always gets out of the pool beaming. Well done Vesper.
GOLD AWARDS
Congratulations to Flynn, Evie, Flossy and Alice being presented with Gold Awards. It is not only Flynn’s second Gold Award this year, it was also a double whammy for him receiving a Golden Ticket!
GOLDEN TICKETS
Golden Ticketers this week are: Joshua and Otis (Minnows), Imogen and Greta (Seashells), Betty (Starfish), Ellia and Lydia (Dolphins), Frances and Flynn (Lighthouse), Ella and Enoch (Coral), Danny and Mayowa (Ocean)
ATTENDANCE MATTERS
No attendance celebration this week. Instead, we took the time to wave goodbye to the Monkeys before they venture down to Monkey World. In September, we will be inviting new attendance guests into our Funky Friday Assemblies. Watch this space.
AXEL AND HOWL’S BOOK
GOAL!
Our Year 5 and 6 football team played Swiss Gardens this week in a tightly contested game.
HARLEY TALK
A message from Harley Bear:
LET’S GO FLY A KITE
As part of the Year 1 learning journey ‘Take Flight’, they learnt all about kites – their history, their different parts and their uses. They decided to make some! There was much excitement during the test flights, some were more successful than others and afterwards we all shared what had worked and what could have been improved.
TANG SOO DO
On Saturday, Maxine, Iris and Jenny all passed their second level red belt grading in Tang Soo Do (Korean karate) at Scriven Martial Arts in Seaford. This puts them only two gradings away from their black belts! As part of their grading, they were sparring with 15-year old boys, and they all showed impressive skills and courage
GAMELAN AT VARNDEAN
A group of Year 6 musicians enjoyed a Gamelan workshop at Varndean. Thank you to Mr Joseph for organising yet another music opportunity for our pupils.
WHOLE SCHOOL TREAT
On Monday, the children will get to enjoy time on the inflatable. Thank you to the PTFA for organising it and also for the ice pops. I hope you enjoy the whole school treat. Make sure you’ve got sunscreen on.
NURSERY UPDATE
New furniture and equipment has been ordered, new fencing is being erected and we are about to advertise for a Nursery Manager and Nursery Practitioners. The job descriptions, person specifications and expected qualifications will be uploaded to the West Sussex job vacancy list over the next few days. Interviews will take place over the summer break.
Several people have asked what hours we will be offering. Initially, it will be school hours, term time only. This will be reviewed once we are up and running as we would like to offer additional hours as first planned. Morning sessions, afternoon sessions and all day sessions will be available for children 2 years +.
Please contact the school office to register your interest. Registration details and forms will then be emailed directly to you.
Have a lovely weekend everyone and stay safe.
