Weekend Blog 11.07.26 – Wimbledon, the World Cup and Our Sports Day

Happy Saturday everyone.

What a sporting week! The FIFA World Cup, Wimbledon and our Shoreham Beach Sports Day. This is in addition to myself and Mr Collinson dashing over to Mexico to retrieve Little Harley (who was watching the England game) and bring him back to Lighthouse Class. Below are a few photographs of us exploring Mexico.

SPORTS DAY

The weather was perfect for Sports Day and there was an incredibly exciting atmosphere as parents cheered on the children and applauded every achievement. Congratulations to all the children who helped and took part in Sports Day this week. From the long jump and football dribbling to penalty shootouts, every child participated with enthusiasm and tried their very best. As a staff, we are incredibly proud of their effort, determination and fantastic sportsmanship throughout the day.

Thank you to Mr Joseph, Mrs Thomas, Mr Herriott and the Year 6 pupils for overseeing the organisation. Thank you also to the staff for ensuring children moved from one activity station to the next safely.

FUNKY FRIDAY

Thank you to the many parents and grandparents who attended our Funky Friday Assembly. Two special guests also joined us this week…..local MP Tom Rutland and our very own Lady Bennett (that’s right, Mrs Bennett has gained the official title of Lady Bennett). It was a fun assembly – celebrating different achievements from the week. Thank you to Tom for being part of the celebrations – we will be inviting him back in the Autumn Term.

BIKE BUS

Over 100 children and parents were part of the Funky Friday Bike Bus yesterday morning. It was an amazing sight watching them cycling towards the school. Several members of the community have shared how lovely it is to see the cyclists ride past their house. One local resident posted the following: I wanted to say that one of my 4 month old twins LOVES watching you all out of the window. He turns and lights up as soon as he hears the bells and the kids chatting. Thank you for making my little man smile.

Tom Rutland was also part of the Bike Bus and is supporting lots of work locally.  Two big projects that we want to highlight are cycle routes to schools and the Bike Park and Pump Track on Adur Rec. These two projects would make a huge difference for our (and everyone else’s) children growing up in Shoreham.

Thank you to all the parents who join the bike bus and support this fabulous event every Friday morning.

CAPTURED

Here are some learning moments from this week, captured by Miss Watson:

OSCAR

Congratulations to Sonny (Year 6) on being presented with an Oscar for consistent exceptional kindness and maturity both in school and at home. In recent months his family has been grieving the loss of Sonny’s grandmother, to whom Sonny was also very close.  Throughout this time, Sonny has shown remarkable empathy and care. He checks in on mum daily with a simple ‘You ok, Mum?’ – and it makes a world of difference. He has a natural ability to lift spirits with his thoughtful words and brilliant sense of humour, and has been a gentle support to both his mum and dad. Sonny is polite, positive and adorable. He tries so hard and approaches his learning with such a positive attitude. He will be greatly missed when he leaves us at the end of the year. Well done Sonny.

GOLD AWARDS

The following children have all had five mentions in the Log Book and were presented Gold Awards: Lily, Emmy, Felix and Sonny. This is Lily’s tenth mention in the Log Book, so receives a special certificate. It is also a double whammy for Sonny and Lily – who also received Golden Tickets.

GOLDEN TICKETS

Here are this week’s Golden Ticketers: Sunny and Gully (Minnows), Freddie and Mikey (Seashells), Polly (Starfish), Toby and Lily (Dolphins), Alfie and Ellia (Lighthouse), Howl and Heidi (Coral) and Maggie (Ocean)

ATTENDANCE MATTERS

The class with this week’s best attendance is Seashells Class with 99.4%. The Attendance Randomiser selected Crow for them to have for a week.

HARLEY SAYS…..

WHOLE SCHOOL TREAT

Thank you to all the staff and volunteers for helping on the whole school treat and ensuring the children got safely to and from the Ropetackle. They watched ‘Gaby Gulliver’s Travels’ – a shadow puppet presentation by Indigo Moon Theatre. Technically it was fantastic and very different to the usual whole school treat. The children were incredibly well behaved at all times.

NURSERY TIME

STEM WORKSHOPS

Year 4 and Year 5 took part on STEM workshops with Alan O’Donohoe from EXA Networks. They explored STEM careers through fun hands-on problem solving activities.

GAMELAN WORKSHOP

Year 5 musicians visited Varndean School this week to take part in a musical workshop. They played authentic gamelan gongs and metallophones, creating traditional Indonesian music, and learned a unique set of notes to perform a melody based on the tale of Rama and Sita.

‘We enjoyed playing the battle music and learning the notes to it.’ – Elara

‘I enjoyed playing and hearing the different types of music.’ – Maisie

‘I enjoyed the battle music’ – Heidi

YEAR 4 – CHESS MASTERS

Year 4 created their own chess set for their Viking Art, inspired by The Lewis Chessmen.

RUBEN AND JENSON

Both Ruben and Jenson were so moved by some of their recent lessons in Year 2 that they wanted to do something to help. Both boys informed their parents that they were worried about the planet and especially how trees were how the earth breathed so ‘we must look after them.’
They decided to set up a lemonade stand to sell to everyone who passed by the front of the house and donate the proceeds to save the planet. The boys persisted for over 3 hours showing some real determination – they even had passers-by who didn’t have money with them including ‘the thirty-running lady’ but who came back to put some through the letterbox – and car drivers stopping to get refreshment and donate. The boys were even generous to people who had no money and offered them free drinks and refreshment anyway to keep them going on a hot day.
They raised just under £100 which was rounded up for them by mum and dad and donated to ‘The National Forest’ who were super grateful for the donation.

What a great achievement. Well done boys.

ISS APETITO – FOOD ROADSHOW

Please may we take this opportunity to say thank you ISS Apetito for bringing their food truck on site and offering food samples to parents and children. There some very positive comments. We are looking forward to having you provide our school lunches from September.

Have a lovely weekend everyone.
